How to make Homemade Hummingbird Nectar Recipe
Published on March 7th 2015 by Sean Nelson under Food and Recipes
Hummingbird nectar is the best possible way to attract the hummingbirds to your garden. It is a great way to feel the presence of these cute creatures, still allowing them to stay in the wild. Once they know the taste of your nectar and get accustomed to the way that leads to your garden, you won’t even need again lots of flowers and plants in your garden to attract them for feeding.
Homemade DIY Hummingbird Nectar Recipe
Ingredients
- Plain white sugar – 1 cup
- Water – 4 cups
(1 part of sugar to 4 parts of water)
Things you will need
- Steel bowl (to boil)
- Hummingbird feeder
Making the nectar
This is a cost-effective and simple formula. Place a clean steel bowl on your burner and pour in the water. Add sugar. Light up the burner (after you add the sugar, so as to avoid excess evaporation of water to maintain water-sugar ratio) and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep stirring constantly to initiate dissolution of the sugar faster. Do not stop until the sugar completely dissolves. Turn off your burner immediately.
How to serve nectar to the hummingbirds
When you are done, keep the nectar syrup aside and allow it to cool. Just pour the water into the bottle (half way or full) and hang it in your garden, in a shady spot and enjoy the wonderful scene how the birds would drink the nectar. But let not the solution get direct sunlight, or else it might spoil easily. Refrigerate the remaining water for up to 7 days in another bottle covered with cap.
Variation
Red food coloring can be added (that is optional).
Warnings
- Do not use sugar supplements or even brown sugar or gelatins.
- Change the nectar every few days and wash the hummingbird feeders from time to time, depending upon the temperature (you can use hot water mixed with vinegar to do so).
- Like many people do, do not use red dye to the nectar, which might ultimately harm the little ones.
- Clean the feeder
-Tips-
You can also make the nectar in your micro oven. However, this might lead to excessive evaporation of water before the sugar dissolves completely.
