Published on May 20th 2015 by Sean Nelson under DIY
Cleaning is an integral part of civilization, and hence, it is too much important to keep our surroundings and home clean. Everything around needs cleaning, however, it is at times tough for us to use different types of products for cleaning different things of our household.
We inspire you to make your own cleaners – all-purpose cleaner. If you consider ‘all-purpose’ from a broader perspective, then we mean, a cleaner, which would clean your everything at home, as also save your everything – time, money and health! Here are a few best recipes… Try them…
All-Purpose Cleaner making procedure (without vinegar)
Ingredients
- Borax – 1 tsp
- Washing soda – ½ tsp
- Liquid castile soap – 1 tsp
- Warm distilled water – 2 cups
- Essential oils – tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, (disinfectants with antibacterial property). You can also mix different oils together as per your preference – 18 – 20 drops total
Procedure
Take a glass spray bottle and pour in the warm water. Now add the soap, washing soda and borax. Start shaking until all the ingredients are mixed well. Now it’s ready to use. This can very well be used as kitchen cleaner, bathroom cleaner, oven cleaner, and many more.
All-Purpose Cleaner (with vinegar and baking soda)
Ingredients
- Baking soda – ¼ cup
- Vinegar – ½ cup
- Water – 2 liters
Method
Pour the water in a sprayer. Add the baking soda and the vinegar and make sure to mix homogeneously. Now, store this. You can also add an essential oil, like lavender, if you want it to smell good.
How to use
This mixture is non-toxic. Use it generously any time you need to clean stains like marks from water deposition on the doors and windows, your bathroom mirrors, chrome fixtures, shower stall panels, etc.
Natural DIY All-Purpose Cleaner
Ingredients
- Rubbing alcohol (70%) – ¼ cup
- Water – 2 cups
- Cider vinegar – ½ cup
- Orange essential oil – 2 to 4 drops
Procedure
Mix all the ingredients and store in a spray bottle. This is an organic surface cleaner that works great on all surfaces.
Tips
Avoid using this liquid for cleaning your door and window glasses if the day is hot and too sunny. This might make the liquid dry out too quickly from the glass surfaces, leaving lots of streaks on them.
Organic All-Purpose Green Cleaner (with Citrus Enzyme)
Ingredients
- Citrus fruit peels – 2 cups (you can use peels of lemons, oranges or lime)
- Active yeast – 1 tsp
- Brown Sugar – ½ cup
- Water – 1 liter
- Apple Cider Vinegar – 1 cup
Note: The preparation time for this cleaner is two weeks.
Procedure
Get a wide-mouth 2-liter plastic bottle to prepare the mixture. First, roughly chop the fruit peels and transfer them all in the bottle. Next, add the water, the sugar, and the yeast and fit the cap tightly. Shake the contents of the bottle thoroughly for about 30-40 seconds.
Now loosen the cap of the bottle (so that no air that would build inside the bottle gets trapped inside) and set the bottle aside. Keep shaking the contents of the bottle once every day, for the first 4-5 days. Very soon, you would notice that foams have started building up on top of the surface (which is the sign of fermentation).
Wait for two weeks, and finally, when you see the enzyme has turned opaque, strain all the peels and pulp through a cheese cloth (or, a strainer, if you have one).
When the liquid strains out completely, add the cider vinegar to it. You are done!
How to use
Now, this liquid is the concentrate that you can use as and when required by diluting it with water in the ratio of 1:10, or as you need, depending upon other cleaning purposes.
All-Purpose Cleaner (with Hydrogen Peroxide)
Ingredients
- Hydrogen Peroxide – 1 cup
- Lemon Juice – ¼ cup
- Water – 2cups
How to make
Pour all the ingredients in a bottle and mix well. Ready!
Note:
Hydrogen peroxide is an earth-friendly, natural disinfectant and has substantial antibacterial properties too. Additionally, lemons are used for their protective, germ-busting properties. It is also a very effective degreaser.
How to make Ammonia All-Purpose Cleaner
Ingredients
- Ammonia – 1 tbsp
- Liquid dish soap – 1 tbsp
- Water – 1 pint
- Food coloring (pink, green, blue, etc.) – few drops (optional)
How to make
Mix all the ingredients together shaking them in a spray bottle and use it. Because of the presence of ammonia, this cleaner has a strong bleaching action, and hence, is good for cleaning glass materials like the inside or the outside of your car, marble or granite floors, etc.

It’s always a good idea to keep all-purpose cleaners handy so that we can use them as and when required, rather than choosing between types. But yes, we must also consider how green and safe the products are that we often consider buying from our stores and markets.
